The process of transformation through makeup and hair in the film 'Elizabeth' by Shekhar Kapur in 1998

The observation of symbolic importance of makeup in hair to transform and disguise within this film is evident throughout as even though her makeup and hair looks very natural and elegant which is denoted through the very little amount of makeup on her face. The colours denoted on Elizabeth connote importance and royalty as she wears a lot of read which can portray dominance. However near the start of the film she hasn't got the greatest amount of authority as no one took her very serious which connotes that feminism was still an issue around this time. The symbolic importance of makeup and hair to disguise and transform within this film is evident throughout as she has a team who remove her makeup and hair in the evening which suggests that her appearance is extremely important in maintaining her image.
Elizabeth is portrayed throughout the film as quite weak and in need of help as no one really takes her seriously however within the film her makeup doesn't change much which suggests that her appearance and images are extremely important and that she needs to maintain it to keep her power and continuity. Elizabeth is portrayed with such a delicate soul as she is easily upset or offended and taken back by what people say to her which connotes that this may be why she is struggling. Also the head pieces worn by Elizabeth throughout the film get bigger and more intriguing and unique as her hair is usually very voluminous and big.
The portrayal of Elizabeth within the film isn't exactly accurate or historically relevant as the director of the film decided to change the representation as Elizabeth and she was know as the 'Virgin queen' which within the film she isn't known as. This suggests that the director of the film decided to turn the story into something more twisted and intriguing as she is royalty and still makes mistakes which aren't exactly masked which as an audience you wouldn't really expect.
The designers adapted the look for contemporary audience greatly as they are all more glamorous than would be expected even though they look very natural and also the portrayal of Elizabeth has been changed and adapted to make the film more intriguing and different as she is no longer seen as the 'Virgin queen' even though nearer to the end of the film she declares herself as a virgin. This denotes a different side to Elizabeth and she isn't very strong me is seen as weak throughout the film. At the end of the film Elizabeth transforms herself into the 'Virgin Queen' that is expected of her and gets her hair cute off declaring that she has now become a virgin this suggests that Elizabeth felt that to rid herself of all that has happened she needed to change her appearance and make herself into a stronger Queen for everyone one to see as dominant and independent.
